San Diego has one of the highest concentration of breweries in the United States. And we’re not talking mediocre breweries- many of these breweries are world-class and known nationwide.

It was not easy to narrow down our favorite five breweries in San Diego, but each of the five listed below has something special that’s worthy of making this list.

Here are the five best breweries in San Diego according to the BreweryCheck editorial staff, in no particular order–

1) Belching Beaver Tasting Room

Belching Beaver Tasting Room is known for their unique beers with witty names- Peanut Butter Milk Stout, Me So Honey and the Little Yellow Different just to name a few. The exposed brick wall decorated with local art for sale provides a casual and relaxed vibe. This place can really fill up fast during events like trivia night, but can also be a relatively chill place to drink a few beers in the middle of a Saturday or Sunday as well. It is important to note however that this is a tasting room, so no food is served but the do welcome you to bring in your own food! Regardless, highly recommended!

2) Green Flash Brewing Co

Green Flash Brewing Co offers one of the best brewery tours in greater San Diego. It’s also located near a few other breweries as well, which makes it super convenient spot to begin a solid brewery hop. They offer small tastings, ½ glasses and full glasses at very affordable prices. Green Flash does get busy but the space is enormous so there is usually plenty of seating and space regardless of day or time. Oh, and it’s very dog friendly.

3) Half Door Brewing

Half Door Brewing is built from a renovated home in the downtown Gaslamp district. The home and decor makes you feel like you’re more in New Orleans than San Diego even though the brewery is technically Irish-themed. The beer selection is heavily skewed towards IPAs and stouts but they are good. The food however is amazing. For the location and decor alone, this place is worth a visit.

4) Ballast Point Brewery

Ballast Point has multiple locations in San Diego as well as some outside of San Diego as well, making it one of the better-known breweries in San Diego by name recognition alone. Not all locations serve food and no two locations are alike in terms of vibe or decor. But they all reliably serve one of the largest and tastiest beer selections in the greater San Diego area.

Modern Times Beer

5) Modern Times Beer

Modern Times Beer doubles as a brewery as well as a coffee roaster and coffeehouse. They also have a cool story– founded by a Stone Brewing Co alumni, funded by a kickstarter and employee-owned, you can definitely feel the sense of community at this brewery. The extremely diverse beer selection allows anyone — even non-beer drinkers — to find something they’d enjoy, and that’s not easy to do. This is a must-see.
